It’s that time of year again, CES is in full swing and heavy hitters, NVIDIA have stolen the show already. Announcing a new refresh of the GeForce RTX 40 series with the GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series, including:
- GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER
- GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER
- GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER
But what does this refresh mean, and how do they compare to the none SUPER variants? Well, we have you covered, sit back, relax and find out all you need to know about the New GeForce RTX 40 SUPER series.
What is a SUPER Variant?
In layman’s terms, the SUPER variants are slightly upgraded versions of previous graphics cards. Boasting higher clock speeds and more cores, these GPUs are the stepping stone between generations and are usually, on average, 15% faster than their predecessors. This isn’t the first time NVIDIA have released a SUPER variants of their cards, they have been doing this since the 20 series (2019) and have followed suit with the 30 and 40 series. But what does this mean for performance?
GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER
Beginning with the most budget-friendly option from the GeForce RTX 40 series, the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER has seen an upgrade over the previous version of the RTX 4070.
GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Core Count
Starting off the show, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER boasts a 20% increase when it comes to its overall core count when compared to the GeForce RTX 4070. The cuda core count has jumped to 7168 from 5888 on the RTX 4070 SUPER. But what does that mean for performance?
GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Performance
With this upgrade to the core count, users can expect the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER to have an uplift in performance. Whilst we don’t know how much better the GPU will perform in real world scenarios, NVIDIA has stated that the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER will perform 1.5 times better than the RTX 3090 (with DLSS 3). They suggest that this GPU is perfect for 1440p max settings. Until the card is released, we will all have to wait to see how well the card will perform in games. Given how it has worked in the past, the RTX 4070 SUPER will sit perfectly between the RTX 4070 and the 4070 TI when it comes to performance.
GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Release Date & Price
There isn’t long to wait for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER; this GPU will be available on January 17th with a starting price of £579.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER
Next up in the RTX 40 SUPER series is the RTX 4070 TI SUPER. This is the first ever TI SUPER GPU that NVIDIA has released. Typically, the TI variant stands above the SUPER, but NVIDIA has upgraded their 4070 TI this year.
GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER Core Count & VRAM Upgrade
Following suit, the GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER has roughly a 10% increase in core count from the previous 4070 TI. Coming in at 8448 Cuda cores compared to the previous 7680. The most significant upgrade for the 4070 TI SUPER is the VRAM upgrade. Going from 12 GB on the original 4070 TI up to 16GB on the new GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER, this boost in VRAM will help the card perform better at higher resolutions.
GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER Performance
Again NVIDIA claims that the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is 1.6X faster than the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and 2.5X faster with DLSS 3 in the most graphically demanding games. But again, we won’t know real-world performance until the card is released to the public. But with an educated guess, this card will sit between the RTX 4070 TI and the 4080, meaning it will be a fantastic machine for 1440p and even handle 4K in some instances.
GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER Release Date & Price
You will have to wait a little longer for the GeForce RTX 4070 TI SUPER, which will be released on January 24th with a starting price of £769.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER
Saving the best till last, the final offering in the new NVIDIA lineup is the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Core Count
If you haven’t seen the trend yet, each one of these cards has an increased core count, and the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is no expectation. With an increase of just over 5%, the new 4080 SUPER has an impressive 10240 Cuda Cores compared to the original 4080’s 9728 Core count. But where does this place the card in performance terms?
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Performance
Again, NVIDIA claim that the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is 2X faster than the previous gen RTX 3080TI, but this is done under certain conditions.
Taken directly from the NVIDIA website they say “In Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Portal with RTX, players can immerse themselves in fully ray traced visuals even with every other setting cranked to the absolute max. It is 1.4X faster than the RTX 3080 Ti without frame generation, in the most graphically intensive games. With 836 AI TOPS, DLSS Frame Generation delivers an extra performance boost, making the RTX 4080 SUPER twice as fast as an RTX 3080 Ti.”
In simple terms, the RTX 4080 SUPER is 2X faster than the 3080 TI, but only in certain games. Plus you must be using the Frame Generation function to get the most out of these performance boosts. Again, like the other two GPUs, we will only know how it performs in the real world once it is out to the public.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER Release Date & Price
With the longest wait, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is due to release on January 31st with a starting price of £949.
Overall, only time will show how well these GPUs will perform. But to quickly recap, if you’re looking for an amazing 1440p card then the RTX 4070 SUPER is the one for you. If you are looking for a GPU that will do amazing with 1440p and want to dabble in 4k then the RTX 4070 TI SUPER is your best choice. And finally, if you’re looking for a 4K monster that is only outperformed (according to NVIDIA) by the 4090, then the RTX 4080 SUPER is your best option.
